Inspired by the classic surf sound born in Southern California, the new G&L Doheny takes its name from the iconic beach in the heart of Orange County where ’60s surf pioneers became legends. Since those halcyon days, both music and surfing have evolved far beyond their roots, and so has the performance of the gear.

Doheny takes the bolt-on offset-body into new sonic territory with newly developed Magnetic Field Design jazz pickups, the first on any production G&L. Naturally, these new pickups will invite comparison to Leo’s jumbo MFD ASAT® Special pickups, given they employ a narrow bobbin aperture and broad coil splay. But Doheny’s MFD pickups are more about jangle than twang, just as they should be for a guitar like this. With a classic jazz bobbin aperture wrapped with traditional Formvar wire, these pickups just might be the approach Leo would have taken had he been with us a few years longer.

So what’s it like? The sound is rich in harmonics yet surprisingly full, the result of carefully researching and applying Leo’s creative work across the decades. The Doheny pickups deliver the experience fans have hoped for, with their flexibility maximized by the PTB* tone system that allows echoes of yesteryear while delivering more output and range for today’s music. Add in Leo’s finest vibrato for enhanced tuning stability and improved sustain, and the results are astounding.

MFD Pickups

As a signature feature of G&L, Magnetic Field Design (MFD) pickups are found in the majority of their electric guitars and basses, regarded as a defining characteristic. By transferring the magnetic field to the top of the pickup rather than the middle, they provide a responsive tone with clarity and a wide frequency response. And Leo Fender did this by constructing the MFD pickups utilizing a ceramic bar magnet (installed beneath each coil), with soft iron pole pieces. MFD pickups also yield about twice the output per wind, making them less noisy than most conventional pickups while allowing for greater overall output. The standout feature of MFD pickups is their adjustable pole pieces, enabling players to fine-tune the height of each pole piece for customized string output and EQ experimentation. As a result, the pickups produce less noise, have a very wide dynamic range, and more output while still retainging the glassy tone which we all love.

Dual-Fulcfrum Tremolo

The G&L Dual-Fulcrum® vibrato, designed by Leo Fender, redefines tremolo systems with its dual-pivoting design. Unlike vintage tremolos, it uses two pivot points for a smoother feel and allows both upward and downward bends. It features a hardened steel bridge plate and knife-edge bolts set in brass inserts for durability and stability. The machined aluminum tremolo arm, secured with a single locking Allen screw, offers quick installation, smooth operation, and adjustable resistance. Overall, the G&L Dual-Fulcrum vibrato exemplifies Leo Fender's innovation and precision, providing exceptional performance and versatility for dynamic playing.

PTB System

The PTB (Passive Treble and Bass) system, crafted by Leo Fender, provides players with advanced tonal control by enabling individual adjustment of treble and bass frequencies. Unlike conventional tone controls, which typically boost frequencies or act as low-pass filters, the PTB system takes a unique approach by emphasizing frequency cuts. This allows for precise tailoring of treble and bass levels, empowering players to sculpt their sound exactly as desired, regardless of playing position. In some sense, PTB functions like an EQ, right there on your guitar and makes it effortless to control your instrument's sonic character.
